Welcome to All About Vitamins

All about vitamins has been designed to be a single source for anything you want to know about vitamins and supplements. A dietary supplement is anything that is added to your diet to enhance your health and well being.  This includes vitamins, minerals,  nutrients and herbal additions to your diet and is generally taken in a tablet form.

Vitamins

Vitamins are substances that are required by the human body for growth and other normal activities. Vitamins cannot be made by the body and have to be taken in the form of food or a supplement if the diet does not provide sufficient quantities.

There are 13 essential vitamins that the body cannot synthesise and need to come from external sources.

Vitamins A, D, E and K are fat soluble and are absorbed into the body through the bloodstream. Any excess of these vitamins is stored by the liver and can be re-accessed and used when required.

Vitamins B (of which there are 9 types) and C are water soluble and any excess is excreted from the body in urine. As the body cannot store these vitamins they need to be regularly replaced as part of a healthy nutritious diet.
