What is Artichoke?

Artichoke is a thistle like plant that comes from Southern Europe, North Africa and the Canary Islands. Extracts containing the active ingredient Cynarin are taken from the root, stem and leaves and are used to make supplements.

  • As a supplement, artichoke increases bile flow which in turn helps to aid a healthy digestion.
  • When taken regularly artichoke extract can be used to reduce indigestion and heartburn.
  • Some studies have shown artichoke to be able to reduce cholesterol levels.

What are the side effects of Artichoke?

These include:

  • Allergic reactions in people who have allergies to other plants in the same family (Compositae). This includes daisies, marigolds and chrysanthemums.
  • Obstruction of the bile duct as a result of artichoke increasing bile flow.
  • Artichoke can make gallstones worse as a result of increased bile flow.
